Hard Riddles With Answers for Kids and Adults

I like hard riddles that make me stare at the ceiling for a minute, not riddles that cheat. These are the ones I would actually use at game night, in a classroom, or whenever someone gets a little too confident.

How to Tackle a Hard Riddle

Read the exact wording before you start adding assumptions. The hardest riddles usually hide in one ordinary word, a small timing detail, or a fact your brain quietly invents.

I give myself about a minute before looking at an answer. Any longer and I start negotiating with the riddle like it owes me money.

Hard Wordplay Riddles

1. I am a word of three letters. Add two, and fewer of me remain. What am I?
   Answer: Few. Add “er” and you get fewer, which literally means a smaller number.
2. What English word keeps the same pronunciation after you remove four of its five letters?
   Answer: Queue. Remove “ueue” and the remaining Q is pronounced the same way.
3. What begins with E, ends with E, and contains one letter?
   Answer: An envelope. It begins and ends with E and can contain a letter.
4. What word becomes shorter when you add two letters to it?
   Answer: Short. Add “er” to make “shorter.”
5. I can be cracked, made, told, and played. What am I?
   Answer: A joke. Each verb commonly pairs with the word “joke.”
6. What five-letter word becomes one when you remove two letters?
   Answer: Stone. Remove S and T and you get “one.”
7. I am in the middle of March and April but not at the start or end of either. What am I?
   Answer: The letter R. It appears inside both words.
8. What is at the end of a rainbow?
   Answer: The letter W. The riddle asks about the word “rainbow,” not the sky.
9. What starts with P, ends with E, and has thousands of letters?
   Answer: A post office. It contains many mailed letters.
10. What has four letters, sometimes has nine, and never has five?
    Answer: The statement is literally true: “what” has four letters, “sometimes” has nine, and “never” has five.
11. Which word contains 26 letters but only three syllables?
    Answer: Alphabet. It refers to all 26 letters and has three syllables.
12. What word is spelled incorrectly in every dictionary?
    Answer: Incorrectly. The word “incorrectly” is spelled that way in every dictionary.
13. I am always in front of you but can never be seen. What am I?
    Answer: The future. It is ahead in time, not in physical space.
14. What can you keep after giving it to someone?
    Answer: Your word. Giving your word means making a promise you can still keep.
15. What belongs to you but is used more by other people?
    Answer: Your name. Other people say your name more often than you do.

Hard Logic Riddles

16. Three switches are downstairs and one bulb is upstairs. You may go upstairs only once. How do you identify the correct switch?
    Answer: Turn on switch one for several minutes, turn it off, turn on switch two, then go upstairs. A lit bulb means switch two, a warm dark bulb means switch one, and a cool dark bulb means switch three.
17. Two doors stand before you. One guard always lies and one always tells the truth. What single question finds the safe door?
    Answer: Ask either guard which door the other guard would say is safe, then choose the opposite door.
18. A farmer has 17 sheep. All but 9 run away. How many are left?
    Answer: Nine. “All but 9” means nine did not run away.
19. A doctor gives you three pills and says to take one every 30 minutes. How long until all three are taken?
    Answer: One hour. You take the first immediately, the second at 30 minutes, and the third at 60 minutes.
20. A man shaves several times a day yet still has a beard. Who is he?
    Answer: A barber. He shaves other people, not necessarily himself.
21. Two fathers and two sons go fishing and catch three fish. Each person gets one. How?
    Answer: There are three people: a grandfather, his son, and his grandson.
22. A woman has four daughters, and each daughter has one brother. How many children does the woman have?
    Answer: Five. The four daughters share the same brother.
23. A plane crashes on the border between two states. Where do you bury the survivors?
    Answer: Nowhere. Survivors are alive and are not buried.
24. A man pushes his car to a hotel and immediately knows he is bankrupt. Why?
    Answer: He is playing Monopoly and has landed where he cannot afford the cost.
25. You enter a dark room with a match, an oil lamp, a candle, and a fireplace. What do you light first?
    Answer: The match. You need it to light the others.
26. A woman shoots her husband, holds him underwater, then hangs him. Later they eat dinner together. How?
    Answer: She took his photograph, developed it in liquid, and hung the photo to dry.
27. A man is outside in heavy rain without a hat or umbrella, yet not one hair gets wet. Why?
    Answer: He is bald.
28. A house has all four walls facing south. A bear walks past. What color is the bear?
    Answer: White. The house must be near the North Pole, where polar bears live.
29. A woman is born in 2005 and dies in 2005 at age 80. How is that possible?
    Answer: 2005 is a room number, address, or other label rather than a year.
30. A driver goes the wrong way down a one-way street, passes a police officer, and is not stopped. Why?
    Answer: The driver is walking, not driving a vehicle.

Hard Math and Number Riddles

31. A bat and a ball cost $1.10 total. The bat costs $1 more than the ball. How much is the ball?
    Answer: 5 cents. The bat costs $1.05, which makes the total $1.10.
32. I am an odd number. Remove one letter and I become even. What number am I?
    Answer: Seven. Remove the S and “even” remains.
33. Which three positive whole numbers give the same result when added and multiplied?
    Answer: 1, 2, and 3. Both 1 + 2 + 3 and 1 × 2 × 3 equal 6.
34. A clock strikes six times in five seconds. How long does it take to strike twelve times at the same pace?
    Answer: Eleven seconds. Six strikes create five gaps, so each gap is one second; twelve strikes create eleven gaps.
35. If there are 12 fish and half of them drown, how many are left?
    Answer: Twelve. Fish do not drown in the ordinary sense of the riddle.
36. What is half of two plus two?
    Answer: Three if read as half of two, plus two. The wording matters.
37. A number doubled and then increased by 6 equals 20. What is the number?
    Answer: Seven. Twice seven is 14, plus 6 equals 20.
38. I am a two-digit number. My tens digit is twice my ones digit, and my digits add to 6. What am I?
    Answer: 42. Four is twice two, and 4 + 2 equals 6.
39. How many months have 28 days?
    Answer: All 12. Every month has at least 28 days.
40. If five cats catch five mice in five minutes, how long would one cat take to catch one mouse at the same rate?
    Answer: Five minutes. Each cat is catching one mouse during that period.
41. A farmer has 10 rabbits. All but three escape. How many remain?
    Answer: Three.
42. What comes next: 1, 11, 21, 1211, 111221?
    Answer: 312211. Each term describes the digits in the term before it.
43. You have two coins totaling 30 cents, and one is not a nickel. What are they?
    Answer: A quarter and a nickel. One coin is not a nickel, but the other is.
44. A snail climbs 3 feet each day and slips 2 feet each night. How many days to reach the top of a 10-foot wall?
    Answer: Eight days. It starts day eight at 7 feet, climbs to 10, and does not slip after reaching the top.
45. What is the smallest positive whole number that is divisible by 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6?
    Answer: 60. It is the least common multiple of those numbers.

Hard Lateral-Thinking Riddles

46. A man lives on the 20th floor. Every morning he rides the elevator down. At night he rides to the 10th floor and walks the rest, except on rainy days. Why?
    Answer: He is too short to reach the button for the 20th floor. On rainy days he uses his umbrella to press it.
47. A woman walks into a restaurant and asks for water. The server suddenly points something alarming at her. She says thank you and leaves. Why?
    Answer: She had hiccups, and the server startled her to stop them.
48. A man is found in a field with an unopened package beside him. What happened?
    Answer: The package was his parachute, which failed to open.
49. A person turns off a light before bed, and the next morning many people are upset because of it. What light was it?
    Answer: A lighthouse lamp. Turning it off could endanger ships.
50. A woman enters a room, sees a broken window and water on the floor, and knows immediately that two pets are dead. What happened?
    Answer: A fishbowl fell and broke, leaving the fish without water.
51. A man orders albatross at a restaurant, takes one bite, goes pale, and realizes something terrible about a past meal. Why?
    Answer: He recognizes the taste and realizes that what he once believed was albatross must have been something else. The classic version relies on a grim backstory, so the key is the recognition, not gore.
52. A woman opens her front door and sees a package. She does not touch it but knows it is hers. Why?
    Answer: Her name and address are on the label.
53. A man is locked in a room with no windows. He has only a table and mirror. How does the classic wordplay riddle say he escapes?
    Answer: He looks in the mirror, “sees what he saw,” takes the saw, cuts the table in half, puts two halves together to make a whole, and climbs through the hole. It is pure wordplay, not a real escape method.
54. A woman has two sons born at the same hour on the same day of the same year, but they are not twins. How?
    Answer: They are two members of triplets or another multiple birth.
55. A man leaves home, turns left three times, and returns home to find two masked men waiting. Who are they?
    Answer: He is a baseball player rounding the bases; the masked men are the catcher and umpire.
56. A person falls from a 30-foot ladder and is not hurt. How?
    Answer: The person fell from a low rung, not from the top.
57. A woman gives a beggar $20. The beggar is her brother, but she is not his sister. How?
    Answer: She is his brother.
58. A man looks at a portrait and says, “Brothers and sisters I have none, but that man’s father is my father’s son.” Who is in the portrait?
    Answer: His son. “My father’s son” must be the speaker himself.
59. A woman is driving when she sees three doors: one red, one blue, one green. Which does she open first?
    Answer: The car door, if she needs to get out before opening any of the three described doors.
60. A person has to choose between a room full of fire, a room of armed guards, and a room of lions that have not eaten in years. Which is safest?
    Answer: The lion room, because lions cannot survive for years without food.

The best hard riddles feel obvious about three seconds after you hear the answer. If the solution makes you groan and immediately want to try it on somebody else, I count that as a win.
