How to Check a Hidden-Word Riddle
Run your finger through the letters in order. If the answer is CAT, you should be able to point to C, then A, then T with no skipped letters unless the puzzle explicitly uses a different rule.
Cross-space riddles are just as strict. Remove the space and nothing else. “Music at” becomes MUSICAT, which really does contain CAT at the join.
I also keep the category clue accurate. If I ask for an animal, the hidden answer should actually be an animal, not a body part or a word that merely sounds like one.
How to Use Hidden Words With Kids
Start by underlining the answer inside the larger word after the reveal. That makes the mechanism obvious and turns the game into spelling practice without making it feel like a spelling test.
For a harder round, do not tell students where the word begins. Give only the category, such as animal, number, object, or weather word.
Then let students write their own examples and trade them with a partner. The best quality check is having another person verify that every hidden answer is truly consecutive.
