Anagrams are satisfying because every letter you need is already sitting in front of you, just badly organized. I keep these exact: every supplied letter must appear in the answer exactly the same number of times.

How to Solve an Anagram Riddle

Start by counting repeated letters, then look for common endings and familiar letter clusters. If the source has two Es, the answer needs two Es too.

For kids, letter cards make these much easier to manipulate. For adults, I provide no such kindness unless snacks are involved.

How to Use Anagrams With Kids

Start with three- and four-letter words and let students move paper letters physically. CAT from TAC is much easier to understand when the letters can actually be rearranged on a desk.

Next, ask them to write the source and answer underneath one another and cross off matching letters. If one letter remains unmatched, the anagram is not exact.

For older students, phrase anagrams are more interesting because spaces disappear and the same letters can form completely different meanings. DORMITORY becoming DIRTY ROOM is memorable because the answer is both exact and funny.
