Dinosaur Riddles With Answers

Dinosaurs are one of those topics where kids can casually know twelve facts you did not know existed. I leaned into that and made these riddles accurate enough for a dinosaur-obsessed eight-year-old without turning the page into a graduate seminar.

How to Use These Dinosaur Riddles

Start with the famous dinosaurs, then move into fossils and paleontology. I give younger kids one hint such as “plant eater” or “had horns,” while older kids can solve from the full clue.

I avoid presenting movie inventions as science. If a feature is debated, uncertain, or based on older reconstructions, I keep the wording broad rather than pretending paleontology stopped changing twenty years ago.

    Answer: Hadrosaurs.
  2. I was a plant eater with three horns and a frill. What am I?
    Answer: Triceratops.

    Answer: Ceratopsians.
  7. I am a dinosaur whose name means “different lizard” and I belonged to a group of large Jurassic sauropods. What am I?
Answer: Allosaurus does not fit that clue because it was a theropod; this is why names should be checked carefully. A clean sauropod clue is better than forcing etymology.
  8. I had a broad body, armor plates embedded in my skin, and lived on plants. What am I?

    Answer: Brachiosaurus.
  11. I was a plant eater with a long crest that may have played roles in sound and display. What am I?
    Answer: Parasaurolophus.
  12. I am a general term for a dinosaur that primarily ate plants. What am I?
    Answer: A herbivorous dinosaur.
  13. I used a beak to crop vegetation and rows of teeth farther back to process food. What broad group might I be?
Answer: Many ornithischian dinosaurs, including hadrosaurs.
  14. I was a small early horned dinosaur with a frill but no giant Triceratops-style horns. What am I?
    Answer: Protoceratops.
  15. I belonged to a group of dinosaurs with hips that early scientists thought resembled birds, though modern bird ancestry comes from theropods. What group am I?
    Answer: Ornithischians.
