How to Solve Letter Riddles

Look at spelling, sound, position, and frequency before searching for a complicated answer. A clue about “the end of” something often means the last letter of the word, not the end of the actual object.

How to Use Letter Riddles in Class

For younger students, keep the task visual. Write the word on the board and let them physically point to the first, middle, or final letter before answering.

For older students, number codes make a good bridge between literacy and logic. A = 1 through Z = 26 is simple enough to learn in one minute but flexible enough for dozens of decoding riddles.

I also like asking students to write one clean clue themselves. They quickly discover that “move ten places after A” and “what is the 10th letter” are different questions, which is exactly the kind of precision good riddles teach.

Letter riddles make excellent proofreading practice because they force readers to stop skimming. Once you start treating every letter as potential evidence, words become much harder to race past.
